Graphic Design Level 3 at Leeds City College

Course description

Think graphic design then think advertising, marketing, product design, web design, display and illustration. All of these are careers which you could pursue. Preparing you for your next steps.

You will continue to develop your professional graphic design skills using Adobe Creative Suite and develop a highly personalised portfolio alongside a self-directed project, shown as part of the end of year exhibition.

This Level 3 programme is designed to develop technical skills while encouraging individual and creative thinking. The course provides an introduction to all aspects of graphic design including advertising, logos, promotional and informational literature, packaging, moving image, display and illustration.


Course content

The first year is skills-based as the students develop their knowledge mainly through practical work. You will learn how to use industry standard graphics software (including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Flash).

During the second year, students develop a highly personalised portfolio through negotiated assignment briefs. The second year asks for a more individual and independent approach and culminates in a self-directed project which is shown as part of the end of the course exhibition.

On this course you will study:

During your first year of study you will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of graphic design processes, such as printmaking, page layout, branding, narrative image making and drawing. These techniques will be developed through the following units.

Year 1

  • Graphics Materials, Techniques and Processes
  • Photographic Materials, Techniques and Processes

The second year of the course allows you to focus on your own graphic design practice and will prepare you for a range of progression opportunities within the creative sector.

Year 2

  • Developing an Art and Design Portfolio
  • Managing a Client Brief
  • Developing and Realising Creative Intentions
  • Digital Image Capture and Editing
  • Typography and Typographic Design
  • Branding in Graphic Design
  • Graphic Illustration

Entry requirements

If you are part of the new grading system for GCSE we would see a Grade 4 or above as the equivalent of a Grade C in this offer.

Students should have a minimum of five Cs at GCSE or equivalent including English Language and or Maths. A serious interest in the subject is paramount and our interview process will entail you presenting your own portfolio of previous work.


This Level 3 qualification is assessed via a combination of internal assessment, where tasks are set and marked by your tutors, and external assessment where tasks are set by BTEC and your response to them is marked by BTEC examiners.

Future opportunities

Successful students progress to Degree or Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma courses in a range of disciplines that can include Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Marketing, Advertising, Typographic Design, Design & Management, Design for Television, Multimedia Design and Architecture. Those students who go directly into employment from Level 3 will typically start as junior designers within the creative industries.
