Classical Civilisation A-Level at Rooks Heath High School

Course description

Students who enjoyed Latin at G.C.S.E. level and who wish to develop further their understanding of the Latin language and the literature of the Romans.

Course content

Students will build upon your knowledge of the Latin language at G.C.S.E. to enable then to develop a more confident and analytical approach to the translation of Latin into English and possibly English into Latin. They will read, discuss and write about a few Roman authors to enhance their skills of communication, hone their analytical skills and further develop theri skills of literary criticism.

Entry requirements

6 or more GCSEs at grade C and above (including Maths and English Language)

Subject Specific

Students must achieve Grade C (preferably a B) or above in GCSE Latin or the WJEC Level 2 Qualification.



Two written examinations each lasting 1.5 hours.


Two written examinations each lasting 2 hours.

Future opportunities

A qualification in Latin still commands a great deal of respect amongst the academic community. A pass at AS Level enables progression to A2. It can lead directly to degrees in classics and law, but also to many other university courses relating to language, literature and history.
