Art & Design - Visual Arts & Creative Media - UAL Level 2 Diploma - 1 year at Longley Park Sixth Form College

Course description

The course covers drawing, film making, graphics, photography and painting and 3D areas such as modelling and ceramics. You will complete projects which allow you to learn new skills and explore your own ideas using a range of art and design media. Assignments are based on real-life design briefs and you will find out about how professional artists and designers work. This means that you will get a real insight into the career routes available in Art & Design and Media Studies.

You will have access to excellent art and media facilities, including studio space, workshops, a kiln room, specialist art and design resources and materials, and digital imaging. In media we have a suite of Apple iMacs and MacBook Pros, green-screen, 3D screening, digital SLR cameras and expert video equipment.

Course content

These are some of the areas you will study:

  • Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills
  • Introduction to contextual research
  • Introduction to drawing skills
  • Introduction to communication skills
  • Solving 2D creative problems
  • Solving 3D creative problems
  • Solving time-based creative problems
  • Developing and producing a personal project

The final unit, which can be achieved at either Level 2 or 3, requires you to demonstrate an ability to use your knowledge, skills and understanding to successfully complete an assignment that involves greater self-direction in preparation for study at a more advanced level.

A number of specifications will be changing and prospectus entries are based on information we have to date. This means that course content may be subject to change.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 2 GCSEs at Grade 3/D.  You will normally need at least a Grade 3/D in English Language and Maths.  You do not need to have a qualification in Art and Design or Media Studies but you should have a keen interest in either subject.  If you have a portfolio of artwork or films you have made, you should bring it to interview.


You will be assessed throughout the course through the presentation of your sketch pads and portfolio, including all your projects and coursework.  There is no exam element.


Financial information

Everything you must have to undertake the course will be provided by college.  You may have to pay for extras such as trips/visits.

Future opportunities

Students from this course can progress onto the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design or UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production. You could study A Levels in subjects such as Art, Media Studies, 3D Design or Photography.
