English Language AS level at Malmesbury School

Course description

  1. Students will gain an understanding of how language works, from the smallest units of sound to the way whole texts are structured and everything in between!
  2. This knowledge is applied to textual analysis as students explore the linguistic decisions writers and speakers make and how contextual factors influence these decisions.
  3. Students will learn about many of the wider concepts and theories surrounding language use, including the representation of gender and power. Are men and women portrayed in the same way in advertisements? Are all conversations a power struggle?
  4. Once students understand how language works, they will harness its power for themselves in their own writing about topical issues, in a range of genres.
  5. In Year 13, we also study Language Change, looking at how the English Language has evolved from runic inscriptions to the rich and complex system we use today. Students will also learn about how children learn to speak from acclimatisation pre-birth to advanced linguistic competence by the age of seven.
