Business Level 1 Diploma in Vocational Studies at Bedford College

Course description

This course will develop your skills, knowledge and overall performance of business administration. It will prepare you for employment or allow you to progress on to our Level 2 programme. You will undertake short periods of work shadowing and experience to develop your understanding and knowledge of the range of work opportunities available. You will also develop a range of skills while improving your confidence in the classroom, allowing you to succeed in the future.

Course content

The course will allow you to carry out routine office tasks including filing, using equipment safely, communicating with others and using IT software. You will also gain an insight into the hospitality/travel and tourism/retail industries.

During the course you will study the following units:

  • Self-assessment, job opportunities for business administration, and career progression
  • Working in business and administration
  • Making and receiving calls
  • Handling mail
  • Creating business documents
  • Recording business transactions
  • Supporting business meetings
  • Working as part of a group
  • Understanding the business of retail
  • Introduction to the hospitality industry
  • Customer service in travel and tourism
  • Planning a trip to a visitor attraction.


Your course will be brought to life by a range of trips and guest speakers, as well as work shadowing/work experience. You will also be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills by completing Functional Skills or GCSEs in both.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a genuine interest in Business & Retail. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level would be an advantage.


You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including the completion of written assignments, role plays, practical activities and presentations.

Financial information

This course is free for students aged 16-18. If you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit) this course could be free. Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

After successfully completing this course you can pursue a career as an office junior or progress on to one of our Level 2 programmes in Administration or Business. Alternatively, you can work and study by completing our Apprenticeship in Business Administration.

Further information

To take part in this course you will be required to supply all of your own stationery. You must also pay a fee of £20 for course materials. You will be required to undertake approximately four hours of independent study a week to support your learning. You will need to spend £50 to attend trips that will complement your course.
