A Level Dance at Theale Green School

Course description

A level dance aims to develop and extend the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to participate in, and communicate through Dance in a variety of contexts.

You will work towards creating imaginative dances with an understanding of current practice, whilst drawing on conventions and traditions of the past. You will also develop your ability to comment perceptively and critically on the structural and expressive aspects of dance. The content of the course promotes a healthy lifestyle through the importance of exercise and training.

If you have enjoyed studying Dance at GCSE then A level Dance may be the right choice for you. There is greater empahsis on theoretical work and analysis at A Level as the weighting of the course differs from GCSE. If you have enjoyed analysing works by professional choreographers and have an interest in the skills required by a professional dancer the theory work will be interesting.

Theoretical lessons will be divided into the following categories: Dance in Action, Broader Issues and Comparitive Works. You will participate in contemporary dance technique classes covering Graham, Limon and Cunnigham principles. There is an emphasis on indepedent study as you will choreograph duets and group dances in your independent study time.
