Sport - BTEC First Diploma at Samuel Lister Academy
This course is offered by ‘Go Live’. Go-live is a programme of learning that allows students to study for a vocational qualification. Two days each week you will be out of school with a training provider and the remaining days will be in school working on other projects. The programme is for students aged 16-19.
Are you an active person who would like a career in sport and/or leisure? This course will allow you to develop skills such as carrying out an expedition, leading activities, developing technical skills and learning about the psychology of sport. This course consists of two mandatory units with three optional specialised pathways. All students are required to learn about the body and health, safety and injury in sport. The optional pathway you choose will reflect your aims, ability and career aspirations and will be chosen from one of the following subjects: Performance, Exercise and Fitness or Outdoor Education.
Performance includes the psychology, nutrition, lifestyle and fitness for sport as well as learning about the sport industry and practical sport.
Exercise and Fitness includes planning and leading sports activities, instructing in exercise and fitness, outdoor adventure training and sport and leisure facility operations. You will also be taught about the sports industry and work based projects in sport.
If you opt to study Outdoor Education you will learn about the sports industry, study and lead practical outdoor and adventurous activities, cover work based projects and learn about the preparation for sport. During your training you will also gain expedition experience.
There are no formal entry qualifications. All students are required to attend an interview prior to being accepted onto the course and will need to carry out a basic skills assessment. What we are looking for are enthusiastic students who genuinely want to improve themselves. Academic ability although important to all courses is secondary to commitment and a willingness to work hard. This is a course that values practical skills and the ability to work with others in school and at an external training provider. If you are interested in this course, you must speak to your Head of Year in the first instance. There are no formal entry qualifications. The course is very practical, but a portfolio needs to be produced by the student with support from the tutor. You will perform practical demonstrations when required and will also have classroom sessions to learn and consolidate the underpinning knowledge. There is a significant amount of written work within the portfolio. The course is assessed through regular observations and practical assessments and you will have access to a one-to-one review of your learning plans and be given written feedback.
Students will be expected to have appropriate kit for the sports activities they undertake.
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport which is a nationally recognised qualification. Candidates can then progress onto Level 3 or opt to take further training as an apprentice. Alternatively you may wish to look for employment.
