Pre-Access to Higher Education (Health and Care) at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

This qualification will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for entry to a professional career within the health and care sectors by preparing you to progress onto a programme of further study such as an Access or other Level 3 qualification.

Course content

You will be expected to achieve a minimum of 26 credits from the following units:

- Understanding the health and social care professions
- Preparing for a career in the health and social care professions
- Communications in health and social care
- Health care practice
- Ethical issues in health care
- Protection and safeguarding in health and social care
- Speaking and listening skills
- Using numeracy skills in health and social care

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but you will be expected to have an interview with the course tutor.  If you do not have English and Maths at GCSE grade C (or equivalent) you will have the opportunity to study for these alongside the course.


You will be assessed through a portfolio of work and projects, including group work and presentations.

There is no exam for this course.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
