Spanish AS & A Level at Coloma Convent Girls' School

Course description

The course aims to develop the language skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at GCSE to enable students to communicate confidently and effectively in Spanish for a range of purposes. Studying Spanish in the Sixth Form will enhance students’ employment prospects and prepare them for further study.

Further opportunities for language enhancement are offered through magazine subscription, study days, films, on-line resources and individual work experience in Spain.

Course content

Through the study of a variety of relevant and interesting topics, the course will provide a vital insight into the culture and society of Spain, and other Spanish-speaking countries. Students will develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning. They will improve their spoken and written expression, analyse factual and fictional texts and communicate their opinions in Spanish. They will find the course both intellectually stimulating and enjoyable.

Entry requirements

EITHER

8 GCSEs including Maths at Grade 6 or above, English Language at Grade 6 or above, another 4 or more subjects at Grade A/A* (or Grade 7 and above) and a further 2 subjects at Grade B or above (or Grade 5 or above). Candidates must have Spanish GCSE at Grade B. The Extended Project Qualification, EPQ, will be available to candidates following this pathway. Students who choose to study 4 A Levels will be expected to complete all 4 A Levels, otherwise they should choose 3 A Levels and an EPQ.

OR

7 GCSEs including Maths at Grade 5 or above, English Language at Grade 5 or above, 3 other subjects at Grade B or above (or Grade 6 and above), and 2 other subjects at Grade C or above (or Grade 4 or above). Candidates must have Spanish GCSE at Grade B. The Extended Project Qualification will be available to candidates following this pathway.

Future opportunities

Language learning at A level improves job and career prospects, and graduate unemployment amongst linguists is very low. Many students go on to study one or more foreign languages at university, often in the context of a combined course with another subject such as History, English Literature, Science or Business.
