History AS/A2 Level (Linear) at Anglo European School

Course description

British Period Study: England 1547 - 1558 

This will focus on issues and ideas that shaped relations between people and state from the ‘Mid-Tudor Crisis’ to the death of Elizabeth I.  Key individuals and the wider social, economic and religious factors that contributed to change.

Non British Study: The topic will be teacher dependant:  Either, The French Revolution and the rule of Napoleon 1774 – 1815, or The Cold War in Europe 1941 – 1995.

 

Thematic Study: Russia and its Rulers 1855-1965

The theme focuses on the nature of the Russian government and its impact on the Russian people and society, key differences between the autocratic rule of Tsars and the subsequent communist dictatorship will be explored.

Topic based essay: An independently researched essay of 3000-4000 words.

Entry requirements

Students need to have achieved grade B or higher in GCSE History or, if they did not take History, in another Humanities subject.  It is preferable to have at least a grade B or better in English Language.

Assessment

This is a linear course, all assessment will be at the end of the second year.

 

British period study and enquiry - A source based study and essay questions, 25% of total A Level.

Non British period study – Essay style questions 15% of total A Level.

Thematic study and historical interpretations – Evaluation of a historical debate and essay style questions. 40% of total A Level.

Coursework – 3000 – 4000 word essay on a topic of your choice, 20% of total A Level.
