Creative Writing at Sprowston Community High School
WHY STUDY CREATIVE WRITING?
If you are looking to write creatively and imaginatively in a range of forms and genres then this is the course for you! This course encourages the development of individual writing styles and the enhancement of technical skills and understanding. It allows students to craft their own work and experiment with individual visions.
Students will encounter a range of creative and professional writing from prose fiction and poetry, to travel writing and scripts for radio or digital media. Creative Writing is a firmly established, respected and distinct discipline within Higher Education. It is separate but complementary to the study of English and Arts at A-Level.
This course prepares students for further study of creative writing in Higher Education as well as those intending to study English Literature/ Language and Literature. The skills in writing and analytical thinking gained during the course can also be applied to other creative subjects and disciplines such as Science, Languages and Humanities.
At both AS and A Level, the course will be assessed through a portfolio of your own writing and an exam in the summer term. The portfolio will contain two pieces of creative writing in different forms, including drafts. Students will also be required to submit a reflective commentary, demonstrating a critical awareness of their own writing, including their influences, inspiration and aims and how they arrived at their final draft. In the examinations, at AS Level you will be asked to produce texts based on practical writing scenarios. You will be given a professional writing brief and audience and you will be asked to write a suitable text. At A Level, you will produce original writing in response to stimulus texts.
