Childcare Intermediate Apprenticeship – Level 2

Course content

This course is for you if you are currently working with children in a wide variety of situations e.g. working in a playgroup, crèche, day nursery or as a nanny. You will learn about caring for children as they develop from birth to 7 years of age, covering topics such as:
• Certificate in Children's and Young People's Workforce
• Functional skills Level 1 – maths
• Functional skills Level 1 – ICT
• Functional skills Level 2 – English
• Employers' Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
• The developing child
• Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children
• Children and play
• Communication and professional skills
• The childcare practitioner in the workplace
• Working with children from birth to age 5 years
• Tutorials.

Entry requirements

For 16/17:

You will need to attend an interview, provide two satisfactory references and are required to have: • Employment in a childcare setting for a minimum of 20 hours per week • 3 GCSEs at grade D or above including English and maths • OR CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children Certificate at merit with satisfactory placement reports and tutor reference.  NOTE: Caring and Early Years qualifications lead to employment with vulnerable groups of people, therefore applicants are required to have a clear police record and have police clearance before embarking on the programme. There may be exceptions to this where minor non-relevant offences are on record. However, any offence may create difficulties in gaining employment in this field of work. DBS forms are available from college.

Assessment

You will be assessed by a portfolio of work. Practical assessment will be observed performance in the workplace, questioning and reflective evidence. Functional skills consist of assignments and examinations.
