Course description

The course builds on the knowledge and understanding of GCSE Core and Additional Science.

It is expected that students will have achieved a GCSE Grade B or above in both the core science course and the additional component.

  • F321 Atoms, Bonds and Groups. 1 hour written exam 30%
  • F322 Chains Energy and Resources. 1 hour 45 minutes written exam - 50%
  • F323 Practical Skills in Chemistry 1. Internal Assessment 20%

A Level


Unit title and description

  • F324 Rings Polymers and Analysis. 1 hour 15 minutes written exam 30%
  • F325 Equilibria, Energetics and Elements. 1 hour 45 minutes written exam - 50%
  • F326 Practical Skills in Chemistry 2. Internal Assessment 20%

Entry requirements

For this course a minimum grade B at GCSE Double Award Science (grade C at Triple Award) and a minimum C grade in Maths are required. This course is not suitable for BTEC Science students. You might have an interest in, and enjoyment of, chemistry or enjoy carrying out investigation by the application of imaginative, logical and critical thinking.

Future opportunities

Follow a degree course in chemistry, environmental science, medicine and pharmacy. These are a small selection of courses with direct links. UCAS handbooks will give you further guidance. Follow a Higher National programme in Applied Chemistry and related programmes, such as Sports Studies, Beauty Therapy, Applied Biology, Engineering, Agriculture, Animal Management, Countryside Management, Environmental Science, Equine Management or Horticulture.
