Bikeability Instructor at Capita plc

Course description

  • To assist with the delivery of the ‘Bikeability’ National Standard cycle training. Apprentices will support the all-year-round delivery of ‘Level 2’ on-road cycle skills to school children aged 9-12yrs.
  • To also assist with the delivery of a range of cycling events during school holidays.
  • To support the Traffic & Road Safety team with office-based administrative tasks where required

Course content

Key elements of the role include:

 

Bikeability

  • Assisting with the delivery of the National Standard “Bikeability” cycle training as organised by Capita on behalf of North Tyneside Council
  • Completing course paperwork including registers, assessments, course reports and results within agreed timescales
  • Completing risk assessments of the trainees, cycles, and the training area (including on-road locations) within agreed timescales
  • Collecting consent forms at the start of training sessions.
  • Being accountable for the safety and welfare of colleagues and trainees.
  • Ensuring training is delivered in line with Capita health and safety policy with an awareness of accident and incident reporting procedures.
  • Enabling trainees to cycle safely, promoting cycling as a means of transport and a fun, healthy activity.

 Other

  • Assisting with the delivery of a range of cycling events during school holidays including Learn to Ride sessions and leisure rides.
  • Supporting the Traffic & Road Safety team with office-based administrative tasks such as the Cycle to Work scheme.

Promoting and publicising the Capita in partnership with North Tyneside Council brand and the Traffic & Road Safety team programme.
 

Apprentices will be developed into fully qualified and experienced Instructors of  ‘Bikeability’ cycle training, and also gain recognised certificates in first aid and cycle mechanics. 

Along with the practical skills in leading activities for young people they will also acquire valuable experience in a variety of administrative duties in a busy working environment.

Level of apprenticeship – Intermediate (Level 2)

Entry requirements

Skills Required

  • Regular and competent cyclist.
  • Understanding and awareness of road and traffic environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all trainees including children, parents and schools.
  • Be decisive, maintain good discipline, inspire confidence and give encouragement.
  • Be enthusiastic about cycling with an understanding of cycling as a sport, means of transport, leisure pursuit and healthy form of exercise.
  • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office

The role is dependent upon the successful outcome of an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Qualifications Required
A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above which must include English and Maths. 
The role is dependent upon the successful outcome of an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

TRAVEL: This role involves daily travel around the borough, preferably in a sustainable manner.  Normal working days require Instructors to travel by bike (or with a folding bike on public transport or at least a bike in private car) to a school for a 9am start.  Training ends at 3pm when Instructors will either finish early, or travel to the Cobalt Business Park to work in the office.
