Philosophy, Beliefs and Ethics at Chestnut Grove Academy

Course description

PBE (also known as Religious Studies) is the study of philosophical and ethical problems that affect us all. In this subject, you will consider how we make moral decisions and how ethical theories, such as Utilitarianism, apply to real-life issues, such as the death penalty. You will also have the opportunity to study different philosophical arguments for and against God’s existence as well as the issue of life after death. The subject allows for students to apply their theoretical understanding of philosophy and ethics to relevant issues such as animal and human experimentation, medical ethics, capital punishment, torture and sexual ethics.

Future opportunities

A Religious Studies / PBE A-Level can be useful for a whole host of careers because employers often want to know that people can understand how to think about, and deal with, different ethical situations. It is particularly useful for careers in law, medicine, politics, science and business. Students who do well at A-level can go on to study Theology, Religious Studies and Philosophy at university. However, the A-Level is also well-suited for students who wish to take degrees in medicine, law, science, business and many others.
