Art and Design: Fine Art and/or Photography *FEES PAYABLE* at Hurstpierpoint College

Course description

Choosing to follow one of the two courses in the Art Department enables students to experience a whole range of new processes and materials and to appreciate various Art forms in a contemporary as well as in an historical context. Students may opt to study both Fine Art and Photography if they are hoping to follow a very creative path. Students explore and expand their visual language to a high level which is ideal preparation for Further Education in general, or applying for an Art Foundation course. Following the A level route we offer Fine Art and Photography as separate endorsements of the Edexcel course and students may opt to take these courses through to A2 level.

Students on the Photography route produce all work photographically, exploring digital and darkroom techniques in their own studio and in dedicated groups. Those following the Fine Art route may choose to work through painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture or alternative media such as film, photography, installation, mix media assemblage. Both courses are assessed using the Edexcel exam board criteria.

Entry requirements

This is a practical subject with academic elements embedded within it that demand time and thought and it is expected that students will have achieved at least an A grade in GCSE Art and Design along with at least a B grade in English Language. Students will require commitment, drive and enthusiasm and a desire to sustain and develop an idea through to its solution. The AS Level may be taken as a stand-alone examination; it is hoped however, that students continue to take the full A Level qualification and this is recommended to develop their art skills to achieve their full potential.
