Entry to the Uniformed Services NCFE Level 2 Diploma at South Downs College
This is a course for people who are interested in one of the Public Service careers. The course particularly focuses on getting you physically and mentally prepared for entry into the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance, but especially the Armed Forces.
The course will suit anyone of a practical nature who wants a vocational alternative to GCSE resits or GNVQ Foundation/Intermediate and who is interested in public services, fitness and practical skills.
The course consists of 8 units & a Functional Skill in Literacy and/or Maths.

- Show an understanding of Health & Safety and Hygiene
Within the units above, individuals are required to demonstrate knowledge and skills for employment.
In addition, there may be the opportunity to achieve the Sports Leaders Level 2 Award.
Work experience with the armed services will be provided mainly by visits and different residentials.
Work experience with police, fire and ambulance is unlikely to be available for operational reasons, although there will be visits and speakers.
At least three GCSEs at grade D or above including English Language or Mathematics.
Alternatively, this course is suitable if you have successfully completed Level 1 Uniformed Services as progression.

You must be prepared to wear a uniform of a t-shirt and sweatshirt which may be purchased on induction day.
You must participate in all local visits for which a small contribution to travel costs may be required.
Sports kit as well as suitable clothing and footwear and warm waterproof clothing for the occasional visit or walk and the compulsory residential is required.
You may wish to apply for entry to the Armed Forces (or other public services if you are old enough). Or you may want an alternative career and can apply for jobs and training opportunities in leisure, business or other fields supported by the College’s careers staff.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to proceed to the NCFE Level 3 Preparation for Entry to the Uniformed Services, BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services or, exceptionally, to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Service. Students wishing to change direction can move to any BTEC Level 3 course.
Work experience may be a requirement of your course, this could involve a DBS check for which there will be a cost.
You should allow 4 – 6 hours per week outside your College timetable for assignment work.
