Chemistry AS A2 at Weston Favell Academy

Course content

There are three AS units.  These may lead to a discrete qualification or they may form the first half of a full A Level qualification. Unit 1          Includes atomic structure, formulae, equations and moles, structure, bonding, periodic table 1 and an introduction to oxidation and reduction.         Unit 2          Includes energetics 1, organic chemistry1, chemical kinetics 1, chemical equilibrium and organic chemistry.         Unit 3          Includes laboratory chemistry based on the interpretation of information generated from or connected with student’s experimental work. Also included is the first part of a teacher assessment of practical skills. There are three further A2 units.  These form the second half of a full A level qualification. Unit 4          Includes energetics 2 (lattice energies), periodic table 2, chemical equilibrium 2, acid-base equilibrium, organic chemistry 2.Unit 5          Includes redox equilibria, transition metal chemistry, chemical kinetics 2 and organic chemistry 3 and organic chemistry 4.         Unit 6          This unit includes aspects of the synoptic paper. Also included is the second part of a teacher assessment of practical skills. 

Entry requirements

If you studied this subject at GCSE/GNVQ you must have passed with at least a C, or GNVQ Merit, to start the AS Level.  As with all A Levels you require a minimum of 5 GCSE passes, or equivalent, at C and above


For AS – Units 1 and 2 carry 30% of the final mark.  In Unit 3 the written paper and teacher assessed coursework carry 20% each.

Further information

Lessons are designed to be both active and interactive. Practical sessions are included to increase and enhance understanding wherever possible. Homework is an essential requirement of the course and there is an important practical assessment element.Any science or social science subject goes well with this subject.
