Music - Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music Practitioners (Performance) at Wakefield College

Course description

If you’ve got a passion for music and want to broaden your skills and career opportunities through practical learning, then the Rockschool Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music is right for you. During this year long course you will develop your music performance skills, gain knowledge of how the current music industry works, learn how to write and sequence your own music using Cubase, explore the different styles of music, learn how to record bands using ProTools, create a range of interesting Podcasts about topics you enjoy and work as an active member of a band working towards a range of performances in internal and external music venues. 

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*- C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Course content

During the year you will learn:

  • How to develop your musicianship skills and take part in a number of internal and external gigs.
  • How to communicate as a member of a band and how to develop music material.
  • How to make money from making music. The historical aspects and musical characteristics of a variety of key musical genres.
  • How to compose your own music. How to create a podcast using music technology.
  • How to operate studio equipment, record and mix a recording.
  • How to record live music and perform to a live recording.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at A*-D (or new grade 9-4)
Interview and audition


How you will be assessed

Through practical and theoretical projects that reflect realistic activities found within the music industry.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international students. 

Future opportunities

Further study

The Level 2 is a good place to start when it comes to further education. After your course you could progress onto a Level 3 qualification in Music Performance or Music Technology with further progression to the HND Music Performance (Popular Music) and then onto a BA(Hons). All these courses are currently available at Wakefield College.

Career opportunities

The Level 2 course is structured to give you the basic skills required of the music industry and prepare you for further education and/or a career in the music industry. This course will also help you develop your networking skills with local musicians and organisations. Potential career paths after you complete the qualification include:

      Located just outside the Wakefield City Centre, our Thornes Park Campus combines a beautiful parkland setting with some superb facilities for the study of Music, Sport, Public Services and Travel & Tourism. Features include a Sports hall, gymnasium, fitness testing laboratory, climbing wall and sports pitches.

      Thornes Park itself contains a Rose Garden and Lake of the former Thornes House. The park also contains a bandstand that is used to host musical events throughout the year.

      Other facilities include an 18-hole pitch and putt, Tennis courts, Bowls, Miniature Railway, Cafe, Sports Pitches, Sports Pavilion and Athletics Track.
