Hairdressing Diploma Level 1 at New College Nottingham
If you’re creative, enjoy practical work and want to enhance your technique in hairstyling, this is the course for you.
Cutting, colouring and styling people’s hair is a skilled profession and in Nottingham you could earn up to £18k by becoming a hairdresser or barber, and up to 32k if you manage your own salon.
This fast-moving industry requires friendly employees who have excellent people skills and the ability to listen and to make clients feel at ease. This course will build your confidence and help enhance these important skills.

During the course you will study a combination of practical and theory-based modules to ensure you are fully equipped with the skills and experience
to progress in this field.
As well as an introduction to the industry as a whole you will also learn how to plait and twist hair, shampoo and condition different hair types, health and safety in the workplace, customer service and reception skills, and general salon duties.
Delivered by qualified and experienced hair stylists, this course focuses on your practical development as well as theory sessions to enhance the skills required for the world of work.
You will also explore the progression routes available to you on completion of the course.
You must have ALL of the following:
- GCSE Grade E and above including English, Maths and Science
- A satisfactory interview
- Successful assessment activities including literacy and numeracy. Adults 19+ who have industry experience BUT do not have the necessary qualifications can be invited in for interview
A combination of assignments, practical work, tests and coursework
You will have the opportunity to progress onto Level 2 Hairdressing, Level 1 Beauty, Level 2 Beauty and an Apprenticeship providing you achieve merits or above practical assessments and assignments work.
