Geography A Level at Beaminster School
Geography is taught by experienced members of staff with nine lessons taught per fortnight at AS and A2, split between the Sir John Colfox Academy and Beaminster School.
Results in recent years have been excellent, with many of our students going on to study Geography at University.
All candidates will study core human and physical geography. Students will gain an excellent insight into global issues, hazards and conflict. Candidates will also develop a variety of geographical skills, which will broaden and deepen existing knowledge and be employed with a greater degree of independence.
Fieldwork is an important aspect of the course, but there are also opportunities to develop further skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. We believe students need a broad understanding of key aspects of both physical and human geography.
Year 1 (AS and A Level)
At the time of writing, accreditation has not yet been granted to any new A level specifications.
A final decision about the exam board and specific teaching content will be made in due course, when complete information is available.
At this stage it seems likely that students will complete one human and one physical examination.
Fieldwork will be completed during the course and assessed through examination. There will be no internal assessment (Controlled Assessment).
Year 2 (A Level)
As with AS no final decisions have been made.
It seems likely that A2 will include a human and a physical examination.
Fieldwork will be completed and an independent write-up project will be internally marked. This will count for 20% of the final grade.
If the Edexcel specification is followed there is likely to be an additional resource-based topic examination.
Geography GCSE Grade B Higher Paper is preferred.
Students who have not gained this grade May be considered at the discretion of the Head of 6th Form.
To be confirmed once a new specification has been selected.
