French at John Kyrle High School & Sixth Form Centre
What’s it all about? It’s all about learning to love languages and how they work: about broadening our horizons; meeting people from other cultures and communicating confidently with them. It’s also about learning more about ourselves and the society in which we live, improving our employability and opening doors to a new and exciting world.
What topics are covered for AS?
We follow the WJEC syllabus for all languages and study the following topics over the AS year:
1. Leisure and Lifestyles
2. The Individual and Society
We also develop students skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and we explore more complex grammar in depth.
What topics are covered for A2?
3. Environmental Issues and Social and Political Issues
4. A Film and a book are also studied in depth We also build upon the grammar studied at AS, and develop students communication & comprehension skills, to a good level of fluency.
What do I need to be “good” at this subject?
You need to be hard working and independent. You will have an interest in reading widely in the target language and be interested in current affairs and in a global society. You will want to learn and be prepared to talk about your ideas. A ‘have-a-go’ mentality is always useful in learning a language.
During the two year course, students participate in work experience in Condé, France and in Betzdorf, Germany. An exchange for Spanish students is being worked upon. This opportunity is invaluable in improving and developing communication skills moreover, it’s great fun and looks good on UCAS forms!
GCSE MFL grade A / B (if you expect a grade C in the language of your choice, speak to subject staff – it is possible).
