Religious Studies A Level at Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy

Course description

Philosophy of Religion in this unit comprises further study of philosophical arguments about the existence of God and selected problems in the philosophy of religion. This includes beliefs about life after death: reincarnation; rebirth; resurrection; immortality of the soul; a study of religious language: analogy; language games; myth and symbol; verification and falsification debates. In Sikhism and Islam students will study from selected texts developing a deeper understanding of religious belief and expression. Students will also study a related topic of their choice in the Implication unit.

Entry requirements

A grade D is required to progress onto this course from AS-Level Religious Studies.

Future opportunities

Whilst providing a basis for those who wish to continue Religious Studies at degree level, the skills developed in this qualification will also be useful for most academic courses and recognised by all employers.

    • Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy is situated within a large green site with playing fields at the front and back of the main buildings.  Unlike many new schools, classrooms at HWGA are spacious, and most teachers have their own rooms and are accessible to support students.  Much refurbishment has taken place over the last two years.  Recent changes have included a refurbished library, refurbished and extended Sixth Form Learning Area, five brand new Science laboratories with refurbishment of the supporting preparatory rooms, a refurbished MFL department and refurbished Health and Social Care rooms.  In addition, the school is equipped with a modern  IT network including a cutting edge wireless cloud network throughout the school.  All Sixth Form students are supplied with their own laptops for study within the academy and at home.  The school has two dedicated Performing Art Suites, a Dance Studio and a large hall with high quality lighting rigs, and mechanised seating that provides a flexible performance venue.
