Working in Sport and Leisure (Levels 1&2) at New College Swindon

Course description

The course aims to provide an enhanced induction into working in the sport and leisure industry, together with more specific training, for young people and adults entering employment or preparing for a career in this field.

The structure of the year is a series of short, stand alone courses linked to the sport and leisure industry.

Course content

Many of the courses are competence based: this means that they are linked to your ability to competently perform a range of tasks in the sport and leisure workplace.

Courses studied over the year include:

~  Award in Principles of Coaching

~  Practical Sport

~  Assisting at an event

~  Fitness & Exercise training

~  Award in Improving Personal Exercise Health and Nutrition

You will be expected to follow additional courses in English and Maths if you have not yet achieved GCSE grade C in one or both subjects.

Entry requirements

The qualification is particularly suitable for those who have achieved NVQ Level 1, or have GCSEs grades, or equivalent qualifications, and plan to follow a career in this sector or related industries (e.g. hospitality, leisure and recreation or tourism).

You should be interested in sport and leisure, and, as there are both practical and theory classes, you should be prepared to take part in both.

The majority of courses will be assessed internally using a range of methods – practical, observations, reports, assignments, tests.

Future opportunities

Success in this course may well help you find work in the sport and leisure industry.

At the end of the course you can remain at college and can progress, with your tutor’s agreement, to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport or another Level 2 course.

It may be possible to progress to a level 3 course in sport, subject to your tutor’s recommendation.  If you are hoping to progress to a level 3, it is essential that you gain English GCSE at grade C.
