Dance A Level at Lymm High Voluntary Controlled School

Course description

The course includes: • solo choreography; performance of own choreography; performance within a duo/ trio, and group choreography. • training, technique, health and safety of the dancer. • analysis of choreography; the analytical study of one set work and its cultural and artistic context. • knowledge and understanding of a specific area of study related to the development of one of the following: modern dance, ballet, jazz dance, and performance skills related to one of the specific areas of study.

Course content

4 Units over 2 Years.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*- C. Pupils should have a sound knowledge of dance and have experience at GCSE level (grade C or above) or equivalent at a dance school/club. A good English GCSE is required as the written aspect of the course involves essay style answers.


The practical units will be assessed during the spring term in a practical exam, marked by an external moderator/ examiner and the Dance teacher, which takes place in the main hall. The written paper for AS happens in May and the A2 paper happens in June. Throughout the year, pupils will be assessed within the classroom in tasks such as tutorials, group performances, work in progress sessions, and example essay questions
