NVQ Certificate in Guitar Making and Repair - Level 1 at South Thames College

Course description

This course starts you on the road for skills needed to make a guitar, including different construction methods and different styles of instrument. The course may include visits to auctions, museums, and instrument collections to help build up your knowledge on the development and history of guitars.

Course content

Topics include:

  • Woodwork skills and theory
  • Making a ukelele
  • Selection of timber for sound
  • Guitar bracing patterns
  • Basic metalwork and how to make small tools
  • Selecting and maintaining tools.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs including maths and English, or other related qualifications and experience. You'll also need a short interview with a tutor who will check the course is right for you. To guarantee a place, you should aim to book at least a month before the course starts.

Assessment

The tutor will give you feedback throughout your course.

Future opportunities

Move up to our Level 2 guitar making course and build on the skills you've learnt or to complete a project.

Further information

There is a materials fee to cover the timber used for your first instrument. You might want to buy your own tools to help you practise and develop at home. Talk to a tutor for more information about this.
