English GCSE Resit at Northumberland College

Course description

This course is for anyone who needs this qualification for employment, to progress onto a Level 3 course or for entry onto a higher education programme of study.

Course content

You will complete 3 units as detailed below plus 3 speaking and listening assessments. Unit 1: English Today This is internally assessed under controlled conditions, and externally moderated by Edexcel and includes: *Developing reading skills to analyse contemporary non-fiction texts *Developing writing skills to express ideas and information clearly and accurately Unit 2: The Writers Voice This is an externally examined unit that involves: *Studying written language based on EITHER a non-fiction text OR a Different Cultures prose text *Writing to analyse situations, issues or problems from a familiar context using evidence to support views or opinions Unit 3: The Spoken Language This is internally assessed under controlled conditions, and externally moderated by Edexcel and includes: *Developing skills in speaking and listening *Developing skills in analysing the spoken language we hear and use *Developing skills in writing for the spoken voice a choice from speeches and stories with a focus on dialogue and scripts

Entry requirements

It is recommended that students will already have followed the GCSE English Language course and achieved a minimum of a grade D at GCSE or have Level 2 Functional Skills. Admission to the course will be dependent on previous study/qualification and/or interview.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed by a combination of written and spoken assignments that are completed during the year for units 1 and 3 and an examination for Unit 2. In addition you will complete 3 speaking and listening assessments.

Future opportunities

After completing the course you could progress onto a Level 3 qualification or into employment. It may also provide you with an essential qualification to enter higher education.
