Media Studies A Level at St Michael's Church of England High School

Course description

Media Studies brings together a great variety of different skills. Whether you are analytical or creative, it provides opportunities to flex those creative muscles and create work that is truly original. You can learn new practical skills in the production of your own media texts whilst engaging with something that truly interests you.

Course content

At AS level you will study various concepts and ideas including who media audiences are, why audiences consume and use the media, how audiences respond to different media and how different groups are represented by the media. These areas are discussed through the study of various different types of media, such as advertising, film, magazines, television, video games, internet, radio and newspapers. At A-level, you will study nine different media texts in depth including Slumdog Millionaire, This is England, Kick-Ass, Look! Magazine, Empire Magazine, The Big Issue, The Wire, Gavin & Stacey and the documentaries of Louis Theroux.

Examination – Unit 1 AS (50%) 2.5 hours

Coursework – Unit 2 AS (50%)

A2: 
Coursework – Unit 3 A2 (50%) 1.5 hours

Examination – Unit 4 A2 (50%) 2.5 hours

Assessment is via coursework which is externally moderated and external examination following the WJEC specification.

Future opportunities

Media students go on to study Media at university, production based degrees, specialist training in an aspect of Media production e.g. camera operation and careers in journalism, TV/Film/Radio production, advertising/marketing and Public Relations.
