Sociology - A2 Level at RR6 Wimbledon
Why study Sociology? Sociology is an exciting and lively subject which enables you to understand the society in which you live. It will encourage you to question the ways society is organised and to realise things are not always as they seem. What topics will I study? At AS you will study: Unit 1: Families and households: is childhood disappearing? What causes domestic violence? Unit 2: Sociological methods and education: what are the risks of undercover observations of gangs? Why do girls do better at school than boys? At A2 you will study: Unit 3: Beliefs in society: is there a link between religion and terrorism? why is Scientology the new religion? Unit 4: Crime and deviance/theory and methods: Why is there an increase in teenage knife crime? How is it best to investigate suicide, relationships, shopping habits and drug use? How will I be assessed? Assessment at AS and A2 consists of short answer questions and mini-essays by examination. An example/illustration of the type of work involved: Students will be expected to think critically and reflect on contemporary social issues, develop the ability to appreciate two sides of an argument and come to a reasoned conclusion.
