Dance A-Level at Coppice Performing Arts School

Course description

This course is designed for anyone with a strong interest in Dance. The course is for candidates from any dance background who wish to study dance in depth.

The course offers in-depth technical training in a range of styles and techniques and opportunities to perform and interpret dance ideas.

The course offers students the opportunity to create imaginative dances with an understanding of current practice, whilst drawing on the conventions and traditions of the past and to analyse the form, function and context of dances.

Course details & assessment:

The AS consists of the following units:

Unit 1: Understanding Dance

Written Examination

Questions are set out on the dancer as a performer, the process and craft of choreography and the significance of dances.

40% of total AS marks

20% of total A2 marks

Unit 2: Choreography and performance

Practical Coursework

Section A: Solo choreography and performance - 60 marks

Section B: Performance in a duo/trio – 30 marks

60% of total AS marks

30% of total A2 marks

The A2 consists of the following units:

Unit 3: Dance Appreciation

Written examination.

Questions are based on chosen area of study and a set work of study.

25% of total A2 level marks.

Unit 4: Group Choreography and Solo Performance

Practical Examination

Section A: Candidates choreograph a group piece based upon a chosen question pre-released by AQA.

Section B: Candidates present a solo which demonstrate understanding of a performance style linked to a specific practitioner from the areas of study prescribed in unit 3.

25% of total A Level marks.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for Level 3 study is 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Mathematics; these should be in at least 4 different subjects. You will receive guidance about which pathway will be most suited to your needs which will be based on your anticipated GCSE Point Score. If you have a higher Point Score you will be encouraged to take a more academic route and if your Point Score is lower you may wish to choose a more vocational pathway. However, these options will be discussed in your admission interview. 

Specific entry requirements:

5 A*-B grades at GCSE for internal applicants. Strong performers not meeting this criteria and external applicants will be required to audition. Further guidance will be given on the audition process.

We are rightfully proud of our Sixth Form students who are a credit to the high standards and expectations that we have throughout our school. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and the excellent course provision we offer. We are able to offer a wide range of extra- curricular activities and Sixth Form students contribute widely to the life of our school including music, sport, dance, drama, performances, shows, community and charity events.

      Academic progress and attendance is regularly monitored and personalised support is negotiated to ensure that every student fulfils their potential. A high level of guidance and support is offered in order to prepare students for university and employment. Our excellent Progression Guidance, together with personalised programmes of support, resulted in all students in 2015 gaining their first choice university place. For 3 consecutive years our students have achieved exceptionally well, with pass rates above National Average.

      Our Sixth Form students are seen as role models for younger members of the school and, as such, are full participants in the life of the school and support our vertical tutoring house system. A Head Boy and Head Girl are selected to play a lead part in supporting staff, students and the school as a whole.
