Music A Level at Northgate High School
Assessment is by performance, composition and appraisal. All units for AS and A Level qualifications are 100% externally assessed and must be completed in May/June in the year of certification. Students will perform live in front of a visiting examiner for their performing unit. Students have the option to specialise in performing or composing in their second year. Western Classical Tradition, Popular Music and 20th/21st Century Music are the three main areas of study.
Students will learn to perform, compose, investigate, analyse and evaluate different types of music, developing critical and creative thinking, cultural and aesthetic awareness through practical methods.
Subject specific entry requirements: Grade B or above in GCSE Music, plus grade 5 or above Associated Board theory qualification or equivalent standard. Performance standard should be the equivalent of grade 5 Associated Board/ Trinity Board or above by the Easter of the AS examination year.
The content allows students to develop their knowledge and skills of music, enabling them to progress into undergraduate music or music related degree courses
