English Literature at Washwood Heath Academy

Course description

The English Literature specification encourages you to develop interestin and enjoyment of English Literature, through reading widely,critically and independently, across centuries, genre and gender, andthrough experience of an extensive range of views about texts and howto read them. This course takes students on a literary journey through history visiting places such as Shakespeare’s 1600s, Wilfred Owen’s First World War trenches and the more contemporary worldsof Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes and Sebastian Faulks.

Entry requirements

You will need a Grade B or above in both English andEnglish Literature.

Assessment

AS Level:

  • 30% 2 hour examination: two essays on poetry and your area of study.
  • 20% Coursework folder: two essays on prose and drama texts.


A Level:
 

  • 30% 2 hour examination: two essay questions.
  • 20% Coursework folder: an extended essay.

 

 

Future opportunities

English shows both employers and universities that you have developedanalytical and communication skills. It will help you gain access to the majority of degree courses and is ideal for careers such as journalism,teaching, public relations and publishing.
