Core Mathematics A Level at Coombeshead Academy

Course description

Core Mathematics is a new AS Level suitable for those with C and B grades who
need extra Mathematics but perhaps do not want to sit a whole A Level. In Core
Mathematics, students study content covered mostly in the Higher GCSE syllabus,
but in a much more applied way.

There are a number of optional units to choose from.

Entry requirements

C grade Minimum at Higher tier GCSE


The qualification is linear so students sit examinations at the end of the course.
There is a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes assessing Units 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.
There are no optional questions, a formulae sheet is available and the use of
scientific calculator or graphics calculator is allowed.

Future opportunities

Core Mathematics is an excellent option for those wanting an edge in their UCAS
applications over students who have only studied non-mathematical subjects.
It is also an excellent addition to a CV for any students considering an Apprentice
based route, for example in Accounting or Law.
