Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 National Diploma at South Craven School, the Technology and Engineering College

Course description

This course is aimed at students intending to find a career in either the health or care industries. Throughout the course you will produce a personal and professional development portfolio that will enable you to use your experiences on the course to make informed career choices at the end.
You should be aware that this course is equivalent to 2 ‘A’ Levels at the end of the two years and the demands on students are consequently very high. You will need to undertake 100 hours of work placement in a health or social care setting, and you will also need to produce written assignments that are academically demanding.
You will be doing work experience each week and you will need a CRB check.


Each unit is assessed by a piece of coursework and you will build up a portfolio of work over the two years of the course. Coursework is examined both internally (by your teachers) and externally (by the exam board). There are no examinations for this course. You will need to pass all the units in order to pass the course.

Future opportunities

The qualification you will gain is recognised as equivalent to 2 ‘A’ Levels both for university admission and for those wishing to go directly into employment or vocational training. This course is suitable for those wishing to go on to University to study a wide variety of degree courses, or to train for Primary Education. It is also aimed at those looking to go into nursing, social work or other caring professions. 

With further training and the relevant qualifications you could go into a job related to health and social care such as Health Visitor, Nurse or Social Worker.
This course also provides you with the basic knowledge, understanding and skills that many employers are looking for, especially in the care sectors.
