Sport & Exercise Science BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Carshalton College

Course description

For school leavers wanting a career within the sports industry or to progress onto Higher Education.

You will study eighteen units - six core units and twelve specialist units, which will prepare you to work in the sport and exercise industry, or continue your studies in higher education

Course content

  • Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
  • Current Issues in Sport
  • Research Methods for Sport & Exercise Sciences
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Research Project for Sport & Exercise Sciences
  • Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise Sciences
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Practical Individual Sports
  • Sports Injuries
  • Sports Coaching
  • Fitness Training & Programming
  • Sport & Exercise Massage
  • Work Experience in Sport

  During the two year course you can also gain the following qualifications:


  • YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing - Gym-Based Exercise
  • Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills
  • GCSE Maths and GCSE English




Entry requirements

Four or more GCSEs at grades A-C (Science and English essential, PE desirable) or you will have successfully completed a level 2 programme to Merit or Distinction with Functional skills English Level 2.

You may also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview.

A positive reference is also required form school, employer or tutor (if progressing or from another college). A record of attendance and punctuality is also required


All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Financial information

Tuition, exam and registration fees not applicable to students aged 16 to 18.
You may be required to purchase a travel card for additional visits that may be arranged during the year.

To enrol on this course you will be required to buy a uniform which will cost £40.

Future opportunities

BTEC Extended Diplomas are valued by employers and in Higher Education (universities and colleges). You could progress into Higher Education to study a BTEC Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma or at Degree level, or you can go directly into employment.

Further information

You will have the opportunity to experience visits to different sports facilities.

You will also have access to our recently built gym facilities during your sessions.
