Mathematics AS and A2 level at Shoeburyness High School
You will be using maths skills at a high level and a clear understanding of the key concepts is essential in order to be able to apply them. Therefore, it is vital that you complete plenty of practice exercises in your own time as well as in the lesson, that you keep in close communication with your teachers and attend additional tutorial sessions so that they can support you with this, keep good, clear and concise notes and do plenty of exam practice.
There are 6 modules in the A level: 3 in AS and 3 in A2
The modules generally offered are Core 1-4, Statistics 1 and Mechanics
Core 1 and 2 are compulsory for the AS
There is no coursework, but plenty of practice material and regular assessments to monitor and support progress.
It is recommended that students achieve at least an A Grade at GCSE to get onto the course. We will consider students who may have just missed out on achieving an A Grade, but experience has shown that students who achieved a B at GCSE often struggle with this A-Level course.
So therefore A/A* Grades at GCSE are recommended if you are considering A-level Mathematics.
Maths opens doors! It supports a range of other areas such as Science, Business, Finance and Economics, Technology, ICT, any kind of research in Humanities and Social Science – the list is endless – that can be studied to degree level and beyond.
However, it opens doors in many other areas such as the arts because it shows an ability in lateral thinking and problem solving skills. With A-level Maths you can demonstrate a certain level of academic attainment and impress prospective employers!
