Art and Design A-Level at WALSALL ACADEMY
We aim to produce informed, independent and reflective art practitioners who can adapt their knowledge, understanding and skills for a variety of further education courses in Art and Design. You will undertake an intensive two year course in which you will have the opportunity to develop ideas supported by a rich programme of tutorials, artist’s workshops, technical workshops and critical studies.
To further enrich and provide relevance to student learning we arrange trips to art galleries such as Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Saatchi Gallery and Ikon Gallery. Annually we have an artist in residence to help sixth form students to develop their art techniques which is a part of the Outreach programme. We also encourage students to enter their work in competitions, exhibit their work in The Mall Galleries in London and exhibit their work online for the Saatchi Gallery. Annually selected students enter the Articulation competition at the Ikon Gallery and later have competed at Cambridge University where Jon Snow has presented the awards. Students also have the opportunity to teach or support lower school students, this fantastic way of sharing good practice as well as having anexcellent reference for UCAS. We have outside speakers from further education to disc
5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) or equivalent including English and Mathematics
GCSE Grade B in a GCSE Art or Design subject
Students must satisfactorily pass their AS Art to at least grade D to be allowed to continue to full A level in Year 13.
We expect all students to demonstrate a high level of motivation and have the capacity for hard work. Sixth Form work is demanding and students are expected to take increased responsibility for their own learning through supported self-study courses. Excellent attendance is vital if students are to benefit from the courses. You should be willing to spend many hours on your Art work above and beyond the timetabled hours.
