Building Studies at Grimsby Institute
This Level 3 course provides an introduction to the Construction industry and is appropriate for learners with high aspirations and those wishing to follow a professional career path either in employment or Higher Education in Construction, Architecture or Civil Engineering.
Throughout the course you’ll get an insight into a range of topics that will give a broad view of working in the sector, such as Surveying or working in Management, giving an introduction into the trade through a mixture of academic and vocational training.
Aspects of work to be covered will include
- the technology of buildings
- surveying in the field
- sustainable construction
- property law
- building regulations
It will include Science and Applied Maths.
An element of Computer Aided Design (CAD) is also an option in this course as well as structural mechanics and building regulations and control.
Work experience will include work doing surveying for external companies and organisations.
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual's previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process.

Entry Level 3 Programmes
No formal entry qualifications but subject to approval from the Foundation Learning Assessment Team.
GCSEs grade E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade D or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade D or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.
Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade C or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade C or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 2 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2.

At the University Centre Grimsby we offer a HND and HNC in Construction that will give you an in-depth insight into the principles and technologies involved in the sector and can lead to a fantastic top-level career.
Other graduates will go on to work for large organisations which may see them in roles in Building Management, Building Services, Project Management, Design and Build roles, Facilities Management, planning or working on large infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads and railways.
