Business Diploma Level 2 at West Suffolk College

Course description

This course is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. It gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.

Business employers value employees who are able to communicate effectively both verbally and using electronic communication methods. The course provides opportunities for learners to develop their communication skills as they progress. This can be both through presentations and discussions in which they have the opportunity to express their opinions. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement, taking into account industry standards for behaviour and performance.

Course content

The assessment approach allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work.

Learners have timetabled, supervised, tutored learning support and directed study sessions to enable assignment tasks to be completed in College. Learners should also be prepared to study at home for approximately 8 hours a week. The course addresses many areas of business, including finance, marketing, customer relations, human resources and personal selling. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a period of work-related experience in the College Shop.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

Entry requirements

Four GCSE’s Grade D or above, including maths or English at Grade D (3). However, this course offers flexibility on the outcome of a personal interview and selection process with the curriculum staff.

The College offers a wide menu of Level 2 Diplomas. We will work with all learners in their first six weeks at College to place them on the appropriate Diploma programme that best meets their individual needs and best ensures their success. Within this course, learners will have the opportunity to take either the OCR level 2 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate or Diploma in Business.

Future opportunities

This course provides a route to employment into the many diverse areas of business. These could include: roles in specialist areas such as marketing, finance, customer service or human resources in large organisations or a more generic role in a small local business.

On successful completion learners can progress to employment, Apprenticeships and/or continue their study in the same, or a related vocational area. Learners can progress through further Level 3 study to university. 58% of students who completed this course last year went onto further education or employment.
