Health and Social Care Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Qualification at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls
This qualification is equivalent to an A Level. It can be gained at Pass, Distinction or Distinction*, each of which earns set amounts of UCAS Points. As it is a more vocational style of course it would suit anyone considering a career in any part of the
health or social care sector. It would also combine well with Psychology, Sociology and Biology. It would be excellent preparation for any Health and Social Care related vocational degree, apprenticeship or Higher Level Technical Qualification. The course
will be run by the Social Sciences Department.
Course Details The course consists of a Core and Optional Units. Within the Core there are four units. These consist of: building positive relationships in health and social care; equality, diversity and rights in health and social care; health, safety and
security in health and social care and anatomy and physiology for health and social care. The last three of these are assessed by external examination, whilst the first is internally assessed by teachers. The course will also include the option units psychology
for health and social care and sociology for health and social care. These options will also be internally assessed.
The internal assessment will be designed by the teachers and will involve portfolios based on analysis of case studies, research and related work experience. These assessments will be approved by the examination board and moderated externally.
The written examinations will consist of a variety of multiple choice, short answer questions and those requiring more extended responses.
General Sixth Form Entry Requirements: Admission to the Sixth Form will be as a result of applicants achieving a minimum Grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics. In total students need to have achieved at least six GCSEs of which at least four subjects are at Grade 6 (or Grade B). In addition students must meet subject entry requirements. Students meeting only the minimum entry requirements for the Sixth Form are likely to find the choice of subjects which they can access is restricted.
Subject specific GCSE requirements: Grade 5 in GCSE English Language or English Literature. Examination Board: OCR
From September 2018, MGGS will be offering two pathways at the start of Year 12. These are:
Pathway 1: 3 A levels to completion plus participation in the Sixth Form Extra Programme
Pathway 2: 4 A levels to completion plus participation in the Sixth Form Extra Programme (For students achieving at least 8 A* or A / 9-7 grades)
Decisions on whether students do Pathway 1 or 2 will not be made until after GCSE results are published in August 2018.
All students should list five subjects in preference order. The first three will be your preferred A level choices and the fourth and fifth will be considered as reserve choices. If you would like to be considered for Pathway 2, you will be able to indicate this at your Guidance Meeting in February.
