Course description

Studying Health and Social Care to AS and/or A Level will help you to gain a good knowledge and understanding of the work of health, social care and early years organisations. You will develop skills that will enable you to make an effective contribution to the work of care organisations. You will also acquire many transferable skills that will be of use in further study or training: research and referencing, problem-solving, analysis and evaluation.

Course content

At AS Level you will learn about; For Single HSC: • Human Growth and Development. Communication and Values. Positive Care Environments. For Double HSC: • Social Aspects and Lifestyle Choices. Activities for Health and Wellbeing. Public Health. A2 Level For Single HSC: • Meeting Individual Needs. Promoting Health & Wellbeing. Investigating Diseases. For Double HSC: • Using and Understanding Research. Social Issues and Welfare Needs. Understanding Human Behaviour.

Entry requirements

• Grade C in Level 2 HSC qualifications if applicable.

Assessment

Year 12: Single A Level – 3 units will be studied, 2 internally assessed pieces of course work and 1 external exam. Double A Level – 6 units will be studied, 4 internally assessed pieces of course work and 1 external exam. Year 13: Single A Level – 3 units will be studied, 2 internally assessed pieces of course work and 1 external exam. Double A Level - 6 units will be studied, 4 internally assessed pieces of course work and 1 external exam.

Future opportunities

This qualification is suitable for all careers in health, social care or early years. It offers a route into careers including; Nursing, Teaching, Physiotherapy, Dental Nurse, Social Work, Nursery Nurse, Residential Care Assistant, Practice Manager or Occupational Therapy amongst others. Learners who successfully complete the course have several routes of progression; • Further training within employment. • BTEC Higher National Certificates and Diplomas. • Degree level courses.

Further information

This is a vocational course and therefore has a work related context. You will take part in visits to local Health and Social Care providers that will form the basis for your course work units. There will also be lots of opportunities to broaden your knowledge and help you complete the course through visits for example to mock wards, operating theatres and clinical science laboratories. You will also have the chance to participate in health and social care activity days.
