Chemistry A Level at Rosebery School
The course is split into six modules:
Module 1 Development of Practical Skills Module 2 Foundation Module 3 Periodic Table and Energy Module 4 Core Organic Chemistry Module 5 Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements Module 6 Organic Chemistry and Analysis.
Minimum GCSE grade B (5/6) in Core Science and Grade B (5/6) in Additional Science. If three separate sciences have been studied, then a minimum grade B (5/6) in Chemistry is required plus a grade B (5/6) in either Physics or Biology. Mathematical competence and the ability to apply mathematics in Chemistry is very important, therefore a minimum of grade 6 in Mathematics is required.
There are three written papers. Paper 1 and 2 are 2 hr 15 mins long with the final Synoptic paper 1 hr 30 mins long. Students will also complete a series of Practical Endorsement activities which are non-examined but compulsory parts of the course.
Chemistry A Level is a vital requirement for biological sciences, medicine and related courses. Chemistry is accepted by a great many university courses, some of which require a high level of numeracy, such as law and engineering.
