This course is equivalent to one A level.
You will gain knowledge of backstage roles in the production process as well as first-hand experience of a fit-up, focussing, plotting, and managing technical and dress rehearsals. You will also develop essential basic skills to work safely in a theatre environment during pressurised situations. To develop your understanding of the mechanics of operating lighting and sound designs during rehearsals and performances, you will work on live theatre projects. You will be responsible for implementing a designer's work and realising their ideas in an actual stage performance. We will teach you how to operate our lighting and sound desks, as well as giving you specific training about manual rigging of equipment in the theatre.
In year 2 you will focus on the role of the designer and specialise in lighting and sound design. You will be involved from the early planning stages to the successful realisation of a full scale theatre performance. As part of this process, you will be expected to produce and maintain documentation relevant to the production management of a show, and will keep a designer's portfolio of work. You will be required to supervise a team of technicians in the operation of your design during a live performance.
Grade 4 in GCSE English is needed. It is not a requirement to have studied performing arts at GCSE but if you have, a grade 4 or merit in an intermediate/level 2 course is expected. We recognise that students may have gained experience of theatre and performance in other ways through private training, drama schools or amateur companies. A level 2 IT qualification is preferred. Please speak to us at enrolment or contact the department if you have any queries about your suitability for this course.
