History A Level at Teignmouth Community School
Understanding the past and its patterns enhances one's ability to analyse the present and the future. Few human activities are devoid of historical analysis. Doctors cannot make an effective diagnosis without first taking a medical history. Sports coaches and managers develop successful game plans by analysing the historical behaviour of their opponents. Judges and lawyers draft arguments and write briefs based on precedent. CEOs cannot reposition their companies effectively without understanding market and sales history and banks cannot loan to borrowers without taking credit history. Therefore History enables you to understand and be prepared for the world in which you live.
The new History qualification is being developed to recognise the scope and diversity of the subject in terms of content, concepts and skills. British history will be covered alongside world history, and students will undertake a thematic study, covering an extended period of approximately 100 years. The coursework element will also enable students to explore a topic in history they have an interest in.
A GCSE grade B or above in History and a grade 5 or above in English is required.
Most History students do not become historians, but will take their sophisticated skills of analysis and judgment into a global marketplace. Employers know that History students acquire the skills needed in a complex world. History students know how to find information, how to organise many pieces of evidence, how to understand causes and interactions in events. Employers value their skills as writers. The best preparation for employment is not always in a narrow specialty. Employers know that History students have honed their critical thinking skills, which make them well-suited to an everchanging world of business and technology. History students work in a huge variety of occupations, with History graduates ranging from lawyers, business-owners, museum directors, doctors, archivists, politicians, political consultants, judges, farmers, chefs, military officers, police officers, government strategists, journalists, and of course teachers and professors of history. In fact, the Mi5 specifically recruit employees with a History qualification!
