Course description

MEI AS Mathematics covers core Mathematics (algebra and co-ordinate geometry) and Statistics.

Course content

You will learn how to develop mathematical ideas and concepts to a much higher level than in GCSE Mathematics.

Consequently, you will need to

  • develop skills attributed with independent learning as a day to day requirement in support of your regular timetabled lessons.

Entry requirements

  • A grade B or above in GCSE Higher Level Mathematics and
  • at least five A*-C grades overall.

If a candidate achieves a grade C at GCSE Higher Level Mathematics, they will only be accepted onto the course with an exceptional reference from their GCSE Mathematics teacher

Assessment

Future opportunities

It is certainly true to say that success at AS Level in Mathematics leads to success in higher education generally in a wealth of scientific, engineering and pure and applied mathematical based degree studies.

This certainly leads to many successful mathematics graduates being in a position where they can earn more money than many other areas of the workforce and enjoy opportunities to be employed in a greater variety of jobs, for example, Programmer, Sales Forecaster, Systems Analyst, Games Designer (most companies prefer to employ mathematicians rather than ICT skilled graduates), Biomedical analyst, marketing consultant, management consultant, business analyst.
