GCSE Engineering at Cromwell Community College

Course description

Intended as an introduction to engineering, this qualification allows students to develop skills and understanding which will be of use generally and as part of a progressive career path leading to further technical or academic engineering qualifications. This specification is a development of the successful Engineering GCSE but allows more curriculum flexibility as it can be offered as either Single or Double Award.

The subject provides an excellent route into Level 3 Engineering courses as well as GCE A Level Product Design.

Course content

Students study designing and communicating, understanding engineered products, application of technologies and manufacturing systems.

Assessment

Unit 1: External Assessment (48501)

Written Paper

–1 hour – 75 marks – 20%

Unit 1 consists of two sections, a Product Study section (based on information made available in a Preparation Sheet) and a section on Manufacturing and Materials. plus

Unit 2: Internal Assessment (48502)

Controlled Assessment – Approx 45 hours – 90 marks – 30%

Designing and Communicating/ Manufacturing an Engineering Product

A portfolio/one project for single award, Mechanical, Pneumatic or Electronic.

Unit 3 (48503) Written paper

– 1 hour – 75 marks – 20%

Unit 3 consists of a section on Application of Technologies and a section on Manufacturing Systems.

Unit 4 (48504) Controlled Assessment

– Approx 45 hours – 90 marks – 30%

Developing an Engineering Design/Manufacturing an Engineering Product

A portfolio/two projects or one project combining two technologies (Mechanical, Pneumatic or Electronic) for Double Award..
