Biology at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy
This course builds on the knowledge and understanding of GCSE Double Award Science. During the course you will have opportunities to develop greater understanding of biological facts. You will also develop greater expertise in the area of practical work. The AS consists of three units: Unit 1: Molecules and cells. Unit 2B: Exchange, transport and reproduction and H2: Exchange, transport and reproduction in humans. Unit 3: Energy and the environment. There are two parts to this unit: Part (a) - this includes the following topics; human nutrition; energy flow through ecosystems; recycling of nutrients; energy resources; human influences on the environment. Part (b) - one practical investigation to be teacher assessed and moderated by Edexcel. This will be a progression from the work at GCSE.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses that may overlap with Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Biology, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology such as a Doctor, Nurse, Science Technician or Marine Biologist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
