Animal Care - BTEC Level 2 at Yorkshire Coast College

Course description

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care will provide a detailed introduction to Animal Care. Combining highly practical training with theoretical knowledge this exciting programme will give you the opportunity to study and work with a variety of animals.

The programme has a strong emphasis on enabling students to gain as much hands-on experience as possible that means all our Animal Care learners will be involved in the day-to-day care of all the animals onsite.
This programme would be perfect for anyone who wishes work with animals or who is interested in studying animal-related subjects in higher education, such as animal psychology or zoology.

Course content

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care will consist of the following topics:

  • Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries
  • Maintain Animal Accommodation
  • Undertake Practical Animal Feeding
  • Maintain Animal Health and Welfare
  • Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Animal Behaviour and Handling
  • Conservation and Improvement of British Habitats
  • Introduction to Animal Breeds and Grooming

Entry requirements

One GCSE grades C and 2 grade D's in academic subjects or a Level 1 vocational qualification.

You will be expected to have a keen interest in animals, a positive attitude and have good attendance.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care learners could progress on to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management where they will develop on the fundamental skills learnt at level 2 with a comprehensive understanding of animal management and biology.

Once you are fully trained there are plenty of opportunities on the Yorkshire Coast and the surrounding areas. Many past learners have gone on to have brilliant careers in some of the following areas:

  • Dog Grooming
  • Pet Stores/Retail
  • Animal Welfare
  • Kennel/ Cattery Management
  • Veterinary Services

The local average annual wage on entry into a career in Animal Care - depending on qualification - is £10,000 - £19,000

      Refectory and Square Cat Café

      Our refectory at Lady Edith's Drive is the perfect place to relax and unwind, whether you want a quick snack, a healthy lunch or just to catch up with friends. Breakfast is served every weekday from 8.30am until 11am, after this a huge choice foods are available including a range of premium sandwiches, pizzas, salads, paninis, and jacket potatoes. Our two campuses each have their own refectories. 

      The Square Cat Café at Westwood is a great place to catch-up with friends. We offer hot and cold drinks and snacks. From time-to-time you might even catch a live performance from performing arts students.

      Our Learner Engagement Team also provide other activities across both sites throughout the year.

      Common Room

      The learner common room on Lady Edith's Campus is located on the ground floor and near the LRC. Here you can relax with your friends and play a game or pool and our Learner Engagement team are always on hand to help you or provide information on a range of activities they are organising. 

      Learning Resource Centre

      We have two interactive Learning Resource Centres across Yorkshire Coast College providing lending, reference and information services and offering you the chance to utilise the latest technologies and study aids. Our Learning Centres are also linked to the British Library, meaning no matter what you need, you will always have access to it. 

      ICT, Moodle & Wifi

      Yorkshire Coast College has a great range of academic facilities for both students and staff. Feel free to check books out from our libraries and use our professional printing services amongst our many other facilities at Yorkshire Coast College.

Both practical and theoretical study will play a major part in your course giving you a wide range of skills and knowledge, while working with the latest technologies.

      Printing Services

      Our Repro facility offers both students and the general public, first class business stationery, educational printing as well as a host of photographic and print finishing services, including both black and white and full colour prints.

      Sports & Fitness

      Our Lady Edith's Drive offers a Sport & Fitness Suite which will is available to staff, students and community groups.
