Public Services Level 3 at Wiltshire College

Course description

The core of this course looks at the public service sector, its role in society and working in a public service organisation. You will also learn about social and political influences on the public services and begin to understand more about human behavior and how it will affect your work. In addition, you will plan and undertake an expedition, develop leadership skills and learn about how to work in a team.

On this course there is an opportunity to discover land and water based outdoor activities and develop personal confidence through challenging yourself and achieving things that maybe you didn't think you were capable of, thus preparing you better for the unexpected demands of a uniformed public service career.

You will also improve your fitness. This will prepare you for the physical assessment necessary to get into the uniformed public services.

Course content

The course is the academic equivalent of 3 full A-levels. You will study a variety of topics such as Government policies, citizenship and diversity, leadership skills, communication, team building, health, fitness testing and training.

You will learn by a variety of different methods including formal reports, essays, presentations, residential activities and expeditions.

The academic elements of the course will include aspects of Psychology, Law and Criminology, Information Technology, International and Political Studies. 

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade A*-C, including English and Maths, or equivalent OR Merit or Distinction in a related subject at Level 2.

Students will be expected to study at home and in college and will be required to complete a number of assignments by deadlines.
Continuous assessment through assignments.

There are no formal exams on the main qualification.
You will be expected to study up to 19 units over two years.

The final qualification will be a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed).

Future opportunities

This course also leads to further study at HND and/or Degree level. For example, previous students have progressed to:

  • outdoor education
  • HND Criminal Justice

This course is designed to prepare you for entry into a range of uniformed public services, for example:
Police, Fire and ambulance services
Armed services,
Rescue services (e.g. HM Coastguard)
Security services and prison service
HM Revenue and Customs.
