Art and Design BTEC Subsidiary Diploma Edexcel at The Astley Cooper School

Course description

This course develops your knowledge and ability in a range of practical skills and techniques.

You will be learning how to approach and work to an Art and Design brief, and produce artwork that meets the criteria but also embraces a range of art ideas.

Course content

The course is assessed through six units. The four core units are:

1. Visual Recording in Art and Design
2. Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
3. Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design
4. Communication in Art and Design

The 2 other units come from a range of areas such as: Words and Images in Graphic Design, Graphic Image Making, Mixed Media Image Making, Textile Installation, 3D Sculptural Textiles, depending on the cohort's personal strengths and interests.

You will produce supporting studies and practical outcome(s) in response to given assignment briefs. Assessment will take place twice a month with a major review at the end of each assignment. You will be given an opportunity to re-visit your work and improve your marks. There is no external exam. 

Assessment

You will be assessed on your:

  • application of knowledge and understanding
  • development of practical and technical skills
  • personal development for occupational roles
  • application of generic and key skills.

Future opportunities

This course provides vocationally related education and training for those who are intending to work in the creative industries. You may go on to college to do a BTEC Foundation Course, or to university to continue your studies in a particular area of Art and Design. Alternatively, you may choose to begin a work experience placement at a Graphic Design studio which could lead to a full time well paid job.
